We know that an unprocessed, close-to-source diet is best for our bodies, so when it comes to skincare and beauty, why are we happy to proceed with blissful ignorance, dousing our skin – the largest organ of the body – with products that are filled to the brim with ingredients we can’t pronounce? Well, the irony of it is that the reason you can’t part with your favourite foundation or moisturiser is probably because it works. That’s the challenge with natural beauty: you really need to know what to look for in order to yield the same results. But don’t let that put you off. Here are our go-to super ingredients that will kick your chemical-heavy essentials to the kerb in no time.

ROSEHIP OIL

Think of this golden-hued, viscous oil as a one-stop shop for all your skincare needs. Harvested from the seeds of rose bushes, rosehip oil boasts vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids that are known to reduce dark spots, fine lines and scars, hydrate itchy skin and even skin tone. Yep, it’s a skincare superhero. The results are immediate too – your skin glows as soon as the oil starts soaking in, which, in case you’re wondering, happens almost instantaneously. Packed with Vitamin A and antioxidants that fight free radicals, it works for a spectrum of ages and concerns, from nourishing dehydrated or acne-prone skin to anti-ageing and combating wrinkles. Use it neat for the best results.

VITAMIN C

You might relate Vitamin C to staying healthy, getting better or combatting tiredness, but did you know it also boasts skin-saving properties? So much so that last year it was the most-searched-for beauty ingredient on Pinterest, which by default makes it a super ingredient. Known for its anti-ageing properties, Vitamin C gently brightens and smooths the skin and protects against free radical damage thanks to its high concentration of antioxidants. Because of this, it’s recommended that you use Vitamin C-infused products in the morning so that your skin is protected all day long, but there’s no harm in adding it to your evening regime too.

BLUE TANSY

If the deep inky-blue hue isn’t enough to turn you on to this nourishing oil, the sweet, heady scent ought to do the trick. Oh, and did we mention that blue oils are high in azulene content, which has proven antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and clarifying properties for the skin? Not only does it look super cool – hello Avatar – but it works wonders for a wide range of complaints from eczema and psoriasis to acne, redness and bruised skin. Genetically similar to the chamomile family, blue tansy also works to calm the nervous system, regulating endocrine hormones, which in turn settle the body and reduce inflammation.
